Little Nation of Imagination

The idea for “At Eye Level” came to me when I started drawing for children using their unique language; children inspired me to create this body of work.

Parents bring children to museums in hopes of introducing them to the art world. But the typical exhibit limits children’s ability to interact with the art. Paintings are usually hung high on museum walls and sculpture is presented on pedestals, far out of a child’s line of vision.

The content of a typical art museum exhibit is also difficult for children to enjoy. Modern paintings are intricate, and the images they contain can be unclear or confusing to a child’s eye. Even paintings that are photo-realistic can overwhelm child viewers. Creating such sophisticated images seems to children an impossible task. “I could never draw like this,” they may think when confronted with master works.

The paintings in “At Eye Level” take children instead on an imaginative journey. Vivid colors introduce the mysterious and magical world of animals, flowers and insects and invite a playful relationship with the natural world. Hung “At Eye Level”, these paintings enable children to experience closeness to their imagination and help them develop a love of art.

Being close to the images and colors, children can associate the drawings in “At Eye Level” with their everyday experiences. “At Eye Level” is a child-friendly collection that will allow young people to glimpse something in art with which they can identify.

I believe these works offer children something new and innovative: an eye-level connection to art, and a way to explore and experience adventure. With “At Eye Level”, children can begin to build an engagement with art as well as open their imagination to endless possibilities.
